This week in the Tribune, we reported on the Toll Fire that broke out Tuesday morning near Old Lawley Toll Road and quickly swelled to 41 acres, creeping southwest, and prompting evacuations orders and warnings to roughly 114 residents that afternoon. With continuous ground and air support throughout the day, by Tuesday evening forward progress of the fire had been stopped, evacuation orders had been downgraded to warnings and the fire had been 15 percent contained. On Friday morning, all evacuation warnings were lifted and Cal Fire reported the Toll Fire was 60 percent contained.
Also in the Tribune, read about OLE Health Foundation’s Vida OLE! fundraiser last weekend that raised $4.1 million toward its goal of $8 million. The funds will be put toward a new 11,000-square-foot healthcare campus in Calistoga. The facility will be built on Lincoln Avenue and will include six medical and five dental exam rooms.
And, read about the legacy of Laura Fish Somersal, the Alexander Valley Wappo and Southern Pomo elder who was instrumental in establishing the Bothe-Napa Valley State Park’s Native American Garden. Somersal was considered one of the last fluent native speakers of the Wappo language and was also integral in preserving a record of the language.
